Stop Rhino Poaching –

Rhino poaching in South Africa is a very serious issue, as of the 31 December 2011- 448  rhinos have been killed so far this

yearoutstripping last year’s total of 333. We already lost 18 Rhinos in the second week of January 2012.

Rhino poachers in SA are even targeting dehorned rhinos for two reasons, firstly there is still a substantial piece of horn below the surface of the skin and secondly by killing the rhino it increases the price of rhino horn as it becomes a more valuable commodity. It is for this second reason that many poachers are also killing baby rhinos which have little or no horn at all. Fewer rhinos equals more money per kilogram of rhino horn.

Rhino horn is widely used in Chinese culture as it is believed it can cure a wide variety of ailments varying from boils to cancer and even devil possession. It has no medicinal value it is compressed hair or kerratin the same as you would find in your finger nails.

In middle east culture rhino horn is a status symbol if you have one as a sheath for your dagger. Needless to say many other materials could be used.

The Cradle of Hope – Krugersdorp

WE OFFER HELP AND HOPE REGARDLESS OF RACE OR RELIGION, OFFERING A “HAND-UP” AND NOT A “HAND-OUT” – BECAUSE WE CARE!

The CRADLE OF HOPE operates in the spirit of UBUNTU.

The rationale behind the name UBUNTU can best be explained as follows :

To remind ourselves of what we can do in our everyday life to help others, we attribute the following pledges to the letters in the word UBUNTU :

U  =  Understand each other
B  =  Build relationships with respect
U  =  Unwavering commitment to the cause
N  =  Need to trust each other
T  =  Tune out our differences amicably
U  =  Use our time and talents to help those in need

We define the true meaning of UBUNTU as :

  • humanity, generosity, compassion, helpfulness
  • living productively through other people, true to the age-old concept of goodwill; “live and let live”; thus unselfishly helping our fellow man to lead a good quality of life
  • that a person is a person through other people is the philosophy of UBUNTU through which we can learn respect for our fellow man
  • respect for and conservation of the environment to enable us to live a healthy life on a healthy planet.

Main Objective :

  • The upliftment of homeless and destitute families, especially women and children, through the proclamation of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ by living the Gospel.

As The Bible teaches us, the poor were not to receive handouts.  Israel was instructed not to gather all of their harvest. They were to leave something on the land for the poor to gather for themselves. They could benefit by means of working for themselves, by gathering what was left behind. This stands in stark contrast to the modern concept of mercy aid.  Mercy aid strips people of their initiative to work and take responsibility for their own lives. It is not a means to build an economy.  God’s intention is that “there shall be no poor among you. . .” (Deut 15:4). The  Biblical ethic and philosophy for a sound economy is to eliminate poverty.  We have a heart towards the poor and we are committed to a process of eliminating poverty.  We must change how we do business at street level to line up with God’s mandate and principles.

Revelations 5:9
And they sang a new song : “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open the seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.”

Matthew 25:42-43 (New International Version)
For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
We are children of God, helping other children of God who are suffering.  That is all.  We do not wish to gain any glory for ourselves.  We have no connections with any political party or specific church denominations.  We love Jesus Christ and serve His children.

Sizanani Children’s Home – Bronkhorstspruit

Sizanani Home was founded in 1993 by a Roman Catholic priest, Fr. Charles Kuppelweiser. It currently accommodates 66 children and

young adults with moderate to pr

ofound mental and physical disabilities, their ages ranging between 4-34 years. Our residents are accommodated in 3 independent dormitories, according to their gender and level of independence. Childcare workers take care of the daily needs of the children, with nurses and general assistants supporting them. The staff currently consists of about 30 childcare workers, 20 general assistants working in the laundry, kitchen and cleaning, as well as 8 professionals.

Many of the children have severe to profound disabilities and require 24-hour care. These children cannot walk, talk or feed themselves, and many of them have severe deformities further limiting their abilities of independent movement.

Sizanani Home is subsidised by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health, but this subsidy only covers approximately 50% of the costs. The Home therefore also relies on individual and corporate donors, both locally and from around the world.

Our Vision

The vision of Sizanani Home is to be the best service provider in the comprehensive care, development and empowerment of people with intellectual and physical disabilities in South Africa; within the context of a Catholic Mission, focusing on the most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide outstanding community-based and residential care for people with severe or profound physical and intellectual disabilities in order to improve their quality of life and ensure their optimal development through the extensive training and empowerment of employees, families and surrounding communities.

Development and Therapy

The Home offers a developmental programme for its residents, which centers around the principles of Conductive Education. CE was developed by a Hungarian neurologist, dr. Andras Peto for children and adults with neurological disorders and is based on the premise that a motor disorder is a learning difficulty that can be – to some extent – successfully overcome.

It has a functional approach to teaching children and adults skills to help them gain increased independence in activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, feeding and general mobility. It also has a holistic approach, aiming to integrate one’s physical, intellectual, social, emotional and speech development, focusing on problem solving skills, motivation and initiation.

The CE programme of the Home was established with the aim of involving childcare workers in the holistic development of the children, instead of purely relying on a few professional therapists, who could not have a considerable impact on the development of the large number of children in the Home. After all, it is the childcare workers who spend the most time with the children, assisting them in activities of daily living, and this time allows them the opportunity to teach the children new skills that will increase their independence.

Besides the CE programme, we strive to offer a wide range of therapeutic interventions, as the functional abilities and needs of our children vary greatly. Our volunteer initiative has seen the Home benefit from the services of a number of overseas professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and psycho-motor therapists. The average length of stay for these volunteers is six months, during which time they work on a one-on-one or small group basis directly with the children.

Volunteers have also established a vocational programme for our more able young adults, so that they can learn essential skills for work and the fundamentals of money; it has also seen an increase in their levels of self-esteem and independence. Besides regular placements in our kitchen and laundry, we have also built a small vegetable garden, which is maintained by our residents and childcare workers.

We have also introduced two new programmes recently, with particular emphasis on the needs of the children with profound disabilities. The Multi-sensory Story Telling programme was established by a Dutch professional, who developed individual stories for several children and trained our childcare workers in the implementation of the programme. These stories aim to engage children involving all of their senses and provide them with one-on-one special attention from their caregivers. Our childcare workers have also been trained in the basics of infant massage and they integrate this technique into the children’s daily therapeutic programme.
